Assessment of learning styles and study skills
The staff of Academic Support Services will assess a student’s learning style and/or their academic skills. On completion of the assessment, recommendations for instruction or referrals to other resources will be made.
Instruction in study skills and reading skills development (2 courses are offered):
IDIS 110 Academic Survival Skills
This is a course designed to increase the student’s success in college by assisting the student in obtaining necessary skills to reach his or her educational objectives. Topics in the course include time management, study techniques, beginning career decision-making, test taking, reading for understanding and retention, note-taking, basic research techniques, college resources, decision-making, memory techniques and critical thinking.
IDIS 115 College Preparation and Reading
This course presents reading and study techniques that will enhance the student’s ability to read and retain college level material. The student will learn to implement general strategies for dealing with course material and strategies to improve reading rate, comprehension and critical thinking.
These courses are half-courses (2 semester credits), will receive a standard letter grade, and may count as an elective towards graduation. Academic Enhancement Program participants are required to enroll in IDIS 110 and IDIS 115. Other first-year students may be required to enroll in IDIS 110. Enrollment in IDIS 110 is open to all interested first-year students.
Reading assistance
The staff of Academic Support Services offers assistance with strategies for efficient reading and retention of college level material.
Time management training
The staff of Academic Support Services offers training in time management. This training may be one-on-one instruction or is offered in IDIS 110. Students should contact the office to set up an appointment for one-on-one instruction or enroll in IDIS 110. Time management forms, such as study time planning sheets and semester management forms, are available in the Academic Support Services office.
