Thank you for participating in Alumni College - A Day at St. Norbert. The June 13, 2009 event was extremely successful, attracting 50 participants!
50 St. Norbert alumni, students, and guests attended A Day at St. Norbert on June 13, 2009. The day-long event, which showcased eight dynamic and timely presentations by distinguished faculty, featured keynote speakers
Judy Turba ‘76 and
Dr. Ken Zahorski.
Attendants raved about the professors’ provocative lectures.
Dr. James Neuliep gave a thought provoking session on communicating across cultures and how we can go about becoming competent communicators in an increasingly diverse world. We discussed the various jazz styles of Miles Davis with
Dr. Eric High. Associate Professor of Art
Brian Pirman, took us through some introductory basic’s that demonstrated many features of Photoshop in a two part session. Two popular sessions covered the economy.
Dr. Kevin Quinn covered the State of the U.S. Economy where it is now, how it got there and where it might be going in the next year or so.
Dr. Wolfgang Grassl addressed lessons to be learned from an economic, political and even religious point of view. “Is the family getting worse than in an earlier age?”
Dr. Thomas Faase explored together with the group changes going on in the contemporary family.
Dr. David Duquette asked the question of Universal Rights: and what makes them universal which was followed by great discussion.
Father Jim Neilson '88 presented a session on Visions of Wonder: contemporary art that celebrates and challenges the human condition, which inspired all in attendance. One attendee shared “ the opportunity to witness a teacher in action, someone called to be in front of students, his excitement, passion, and insight was inspiring.”
Judy Turba '76 delivered the luncheon keynote address titled: Rare Beasts and Unique Adventures. Judy shared her Zambian adventures while sharing with us her love of service as part of the
Zambia Project. Plus she was able to bring the story to light with thought provoking photography.
Dr. Ken Zahorski delivered a keynote address on The Poetry of Retirement. This was an informal and interactive session that included a reading of some of his poems, a discussion of the major challenges he encountered, and a look at what he learned from his odyssey in the creative realm.
The day concluded with a tour of the new
Miriam B. and James J. Mulva Library.
Most importantly, the overwhelming thought from the day by those that attended was being able to experience St. Norbert College all over again
"I thought all the sessions I participated in were very interesting. I tend to lean toward the topics that are a little more current event related. I’m always so impressed with the knowledge the professors have in their respective fields. I really admire their academic expertise and am so very thankful to have the opportunity to listen to what they have to share. "
