Professional Profile
I think of myself as an artist and teacher who has numerous administrative duties. Much of my time is expended in operating the three galleries in the Bush Art Center and maintaining the Art Collection. My chosen medium of artistic expression is ceramics; however, this has been transformed into mostly teaching printmaking with the occasional foray into the three dimensional areas of clay, metals and wood. The inter-relationship among concept, materials, and technique is extremely important to me. It is essential that the student artist be deeply involved with the technical/manual and material aspects of art production. The concept is made tangible through the appropriate manipulation of skill and rudimentary matter. This is what I try to teach.
My appreciation of art forms is broad and eclectic. As an avid art collector I use examples from the College Collection and my personal holdings as illustrations of what has and can be done with a good concept and hard work. The galleries, collected art works, and the studios are all synergistic educational tools. Moreover, one needs to be passionate about art, of what it can do for humanity and oneself. To be a productive artist is a lifelong commit to those positive powers of creation.
