James P. Neilson

Professional Profile

For the past several years I have been producing work inspired by the Arte Povera esthetic, wherein I have reclaimed discarded books in order to discover essential elements and metaphors about the form and function of the book. Though I am sometimes mistaken as a biblioclast, I intentionally work with books that have already been rejected, withdrawn, deaccessioned, censored, etc., giving the book a “second chance” to act as a means or vehicle of communication.

I have a particular interest in religious art as well as contemporary art that addresses issues of race, human sexuality, and gender.

My method of teaching art history seeks to understand the advent of art not as a linear evolution in time (one historic movement giving rise to the next) but as humankind’s restless search for meaning, from the dawn of human consciousness up until the present day. It is always my hope that these courses assist the student in growing in the knowledge and skill of recognizing and discerning the creative, critical and integrative process and experience of art in forging personal and collective identity and wholeness.
