Howard Pyle in Wisconsin
Dec. 2-Feb. 7, 2014
Images: Travels of the Soul, In the Meadow of Youth, 1902, and Phips Recovering the Sunken Treasure, 1901
Howard Pyle in Wisconsin features a significant collection of twenty-two paintings by illustrator and author, Howard Pyle, that have been quietly housed for more than a century in Green Bay, WI. Four of the paintings were created to illustrate the short story, Travels of the Soul, written by Pyle for the December, 1902 edition of The Century Magazine. Eighteen works are painted in grisaille, or grayscale, and were created to illustrate Colonies and Nation, written by Woodrow Wilson for Harper's Monthly, 1901.
A K-12 Teacher's Resource Guide was produced in conjunction with this exhibition.
This exhibition is a collaboration with the Green Bay & De Pere Antiquarian Society and is funded, in part, by an Artworks grant from the National Endowment for the Arts. A full-color, 86-page catalogue accompanies the exhibition.
