Art galleries and collections at the St. Norbert College Bush Art Center The art galleries and the Art Collection provide opportunities for a less structured form of aesthetic education at the College. One can view art of various mediums and placements at their own pace and as often as they wish. The galleries are free and open to the public. BAER GALLERY With the opening of the Carol and Robert Bush Art Center in January 2002, the Art program at the College now has three distinct galleries. The Baer Gallery, named in recognition of the donors Frederick and Patricia Baer, is the largest of the three and is the venue for the scheduled exhibitions. These shows include senior art major exhibits, the Annual Juried Student Art Show, the Biennial Art Faculty Exhibition and the major showings obtained form local, regional, national and international sources. The usual exhibit is on display for three weeks with occasional receptions and special Saturday hours. This affords opportunities for diverse selection of shows to best serve our viewers with a variety of what is being artistically produced today. The Baer Gallery is a contemporary space of natural white walls and ceiling, flexible track lighting and a wooden floor. It has nine feet tall glass doors that encourage a peek even when the gallery is closed. All of the galleries open onto the octagonal lobby of the building that is used for gathering and reception space. PERMANENT COLLECTION GALLERY This space is a new concept to the College that promotes and displays the holdings of the permanent art collection. A considerable portion of our collection is utilized in various buildings, meeting rooms, hallways and offices. Large, fragile, unusual or new additions to the collection are shown in the Permanent Collection Gallery. GODSCHALX GALLERY The Jeanne M. Godschalx Gallery was the first art gallery on campus. Its inception was in 1976 and was located in the John Minahan Science Hall. Upon the completion of the Bush Art Center, the Godschalx Gallery was relocated there. This is the smallest of the three galleries, but its impact is significant in that it promotes the continual activities of the Art program through the changing displays of art student projects. This gallery space is occasionally used to exhibit temporary art displays that are arranged besides the formally scheduled Baer Gallery exhibitions. For information about the art program at St. Norbert College, see the Art discipline site. |
