Green Knights Finish Third at MWC Team Tournament

ROCKFORD, Ill. - St. Norbert College bounced back from a semifinal-round loss to claim third place at the Midwest Conference Team Tournament at Boylan Tennis Center.

The Green Knights topped Lawrence University 5-2 in the third-place match after dropping the morning semifinal to Grinnell College 5-1. St. Norbert ended its dual-meet season 8-6.

St. Norbert got off to a 4-0 lead against Lawrence, including a sweep of the three doubles points. Kelly Van Handel and Callie Schroeder beat Carla Schmidt and Greta Elsass 8-5 at No. 1, and Maria Slusarek and Laura Michel topped Gayatri Malhotra and Katherine Valde 8-5 at No. 2. Stephanie Marek and Jackie Wronkowski finished the sweep with an 8-3 win over Elizabeth Byers and Brenna Decker 8-3 at No. 3.

Ariel Bloniarz beat Byers 8-1 at No. 4 singles for a 4-0 lead. After a couple of Vikings' wins, Schroeder beat Schmidt 8-2 at No. 3 to clinch the win.

Against Grinnell, the duo of Van Handel and Schroeder picked up St. Norbert's lone win with a 7-6 (7-0), 3-6, 6-3 triumph over Toby Cain and Sadhana Athreya at No. 1.
