Men's Basketball Wins Nicolet Bank Tournament

DE PERE - St. Norbert College claimed the inaugural championship of the Nicolet National Bank Holiday Tournament with a 75-56 win over St. John's University at Schuldes Sports Center. The Green Knights won their third straight game to improve to 5-5, while St. John's fell to 5-4.

The Green Knights were able to take command of the game late in the first half when it went on a 9-0 run. St. Norbert led 20-17 with 10:52 left in the first half after St. John's Chris Schwartz hit a 3-pointer. The Green Knights then took a 31-17 lead with 3:45 left in the half after a pair of baskets by Tom Katzfey, a 3-pointer by Bryan Fleischmann and two free throws each by Eric Bieniasz and Tony Jandron. St. Norbert led 38-22 at halftime.

St. Norbert opened the half with a pair of 3-pointers from Jandron and Mike Dowden, and the Johnnies would get no closer than 59-45 with 9:54 left. St. Norbert went on a quick 8-0 run to take a 67-45 lead with 5:54 to go, capped off by a conventional three-point play by Katzfey.

Jandron was named the tournament most valuable player after scoring 20 points with five assists and four rebounds. Katzfey and Jake Dietz were also named all-tournament after scoring 13 and 11 points, respectively. The Green Knights shot 48 percent from the floor, making 24 of 50 attempts, and also made 8 of 15 3-pointers and 19 of 22 free throws. St. Norbert had just seven turnovers.

St. John's was led by Brady Brink's 23 points and Ryan Lieser's 12 points, with both being named all-tournament. The Johnnies were 21-for-51 from the floor, good for 41.2 percent.
