St. Norbert Opens Season With Split of Anderson

WINTER HAVEN, Fla. - St. Norbert College opened the 2011 baseball season with a doubleheader split with Anderson University. The Green Knights dropped the opener 7-5 before taking the nightcap 10-9.

St. Norbert banged out 13 hits in the nightcap. The Green Knights trailed 7-5 going into the bottom of the fourth before Garrick Fisher's RBI double and Ryan Way's RBI single knotted the game at 7-7. St. Norbert added three runs in the fifth on RBI singles by Chad Ljunggren, Jordan Powers and Jared Yost. Anderson, the defending Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference champion, scored twice in the sixth but couldn't get the equalizer.

Fisher, who had a two-run single in the first inning, finished 2-for-4 with three RBIs and two runs scored. Nick Pierre was 3-for-4 with two RBIs, while Way and Chris Hillesheim were both 2-for-4 with one RBI.

Kyle Mahlik picked up the win with 3 1/3 innings of relief, allowing three hits, two runs, three walks and three strikeouts.

St. Norbert fell behind 6-0 after three innings in the opener before scoring one in the sixth and four in the seventh. Hillesheim and Fisher each socked two-run home runs in the seventh. Fisher was 2-for-4 with two runs scored, while Hillesheim was 2-for-3.

Bryan Stoppenbach took the loss, allowing 10 hits with four walks and one strikeout in a complete-game effort.
