St. Norbert Softball Splits on Opening Day

ORLANDO, Fla. - The St. Norbert College women's softball team split on the first day of its 2008 season at the Rebel Games. The Green Knights lost to Rutgers-Camden 4-1 before coming back to defeat Fontbonne University 3-0.

Rutgers-Camden, the 2006 NCAA Division III national champion, broke a 1-1 tie in the opening game with two runs in the sixth inning and one in the seventh. Kathleen Dreitlein had an RBI single and Steph Skroski followed with an RBI double in the decisive sixth inning.

St. Norbert scored its only run in the bottom of the second when Lindsey Reynolds led off with a triple. Following a strikeout, Jes Van Hout's RBI single drove in Reynolds.

Reynolds finished 3-for-3 for St. Norbert, adding a lead-off double in the fourth inning.

Mara Resch took the complete-game loss for St. Norbert, allowing nine hits and eight walks with four strikeouts. Natalie Powell picked up the win for Rutgers-Camden, allowing six hits with no walks and six strikeouts.

Kayla Krueger made her collegiate debut a memorable one, spinning a complete-game shutout. Krueger allowed five hits with three walks and two strikeouts, and also delivered a big two-out, two-run double in the top of the fourth for a 2-0 lead.

Krueger escaped her biggest jam of the game in the bottom of the sixth inning. With two on and one out, Krueger induced a double play to wiggle out of trouble.

Julie Hayes scored on a wild pitch in the fourth for St. Norbert's other run.

Krueger finished 2-for-3 for St. Norbert, which had five hits in the game.
