St. Norbert Nine Splits on Opening Day

CLEARWATER, Fla. - The St. Norbert College baseball team opened its 2008 season with a split in a split doubleheader at Miller Huggins Field.

The Green Knights (1-1) lost to 15th-ranked Augustana (Ill.) College 9-3 in the opener before rebounding to defeat McDaniel (Md.) College 7-1 in the nightcap.

Augustana (9-2) jumped out to a 5-1 lead after three innings, and St. Norbert would get no closer than 5-2 after the top of the sixth. The Vikings put the game away with two runs in the sixth and two more in the eighth.

St. Norbert picked up an unearned run in the first inning, and added single runs in the sixth on a Cory Fuller RBI single and in the seventh on an Adam Frost double.

Frost, Fuller, Mike Wallerich and Jared Yost all had two hits each for St. Norbert, which had 10 hits in the game. Augustana had 13 hits and tagged Alex Byrne with the loss. Byrne allowed seven runs and nine hits in 5.2 innings pitched. Eric Knott picked up the win for Augustana scattering eight hits in eight innings of work.

St. Norbert totaled a school-record 11 stolen bases to aid in the win over McDaniel. The Green Knights scored single runs in the first, fourth, fifth and sixth innings to take a 4-1 lead before scoring three times in the seventh to salt the game away. Jordan Vater's two-run double in the seventh inning was the decisive blow.

Fuller stole three bases and was 2-for-4, while Tony Jandron was 3-for-5 with two stolen bases. Vater also had two stolen bases and was 2-for-4. Byrne was 3-for-4 with three runs scored, while Brett Birkholz was 2-for-4 with one RBI.

Brett Yost picked up the win, allowing five hits with no walks and no earned runs in eight innings of work. Yost was also aided by two double plays.
