Green Knights Place Third at MWC Singles/Doubles Tournament

MADISON - St. Norbert College had two flights reach the finals en route to a third-place finish at the Midwest Conference Singles and Doubles Championships at the University of Wisconsin's Nielsen Tennis Stadium.

The Green Knights had a one singles player and one doubles tandem reach the finals but finish as conference runner-ups to total 60 points. Conference champion Grinnell College piled up 96 points.

St. Norbert's Nancy Chybowski reached the finals at No. 2 singles, falling to Grinnell's Constanza Alarcon in three sets by a 5-7, 6-2, 6-3 score. Alarcon was the defending MWC champion in that flight.

Maria Slusarek and Laura Michel teamed up to reach the finals at No. 2 doubles, but lost 6-0, 6-2 to Alarcon and Clothilde Thirouin. Alarcon was part of last year's No. 2 doubles champion while Thirouin was on the No. 3 flight champion.

All other St. Norbert entrants advanced to the semifinals of the winner's bracket. Kelly Van Handel advanced and lost to Carroll's Abigail Pellett 6-4, 6-3 in the No. 1 semifinals. Callie Schroeder fell to Grinnell's Shirlene Luk 6-2, 6-0 in the semifinals at No. 3, and Thirouin beat Ariel Bloniarz 6-0, 6-4 in the No. 4 semifinals.

Lawrence's Hannah Geoffrey beat Anna Reardon 6-1, 6-4 in the No. 5 semifinals, and Grinnell's Toby Cain beat Slusarek 6-2, 6-2 in the semifinals at No. 6.

Van Handel and Chybowski forced a three-set match in their semifinal match at No. 1 doubles but succumbed to Grinnell's Sadhana Athreya and Laura Krull 6-1, 1-6, 6-3. In the No. 3 doubles flight, Geoffrey and Christina Schaupp beat Schroeder and Maggie Berens 6-2, 6-2.
