Green Knights Top Martin Luther in Baylake Bank Tourney Opener

DE PERE - St. Norbert College moved its regular-season home winning streak to 44 games with a 58-47 win over Martin Luther College in the opening round of the Baylake Bank Tip-Off Tournament on Connie Tilley Court at Schuldes Sports Center.

The Green Knights (1-1) will face UW-Superior (2-0) at 3 p.m. Saturday in the championship game. The Yellowjackets topped Dominican University 83-67 in the tournament opener. Martin Luther (0-1) and Dominican (1-1) will play in the consolation game at 1 p.m.

St. Norbert needed a strong defensive effort to pull out the win, as the Green Knights shot just 35.3 percent (24-for-68) from the floor. The Green Knights never trailed in the game, jumping out to a 13-3 lead in the first eight minutes of the game.

Martin Luther pulled to within four points in the first half on two occasions, the last being 19-15 with 2 minutes 47 seconds left before intermission. The Green Knights closed out the half on a 9-2 run, capped off by a Krista Pelky 3-pointer at the buzzer for a 28-17 halftime lead.

St. Norbert had its lead cut to seven at 43-36 with 9:08 left. The Green Knights then went on an 11-1 run over the next 3 1/2 minutes to take a 54-37 edge with 5:26 left on a Tasha Giese basket.

Pelky was the only St. Norbert player in double figures with 15 points. Krista Hawkinson and Jamie Kuhl each had nine points, and the Green Knights held a 44-43 rebounding edge.

Erica Babinec and Amanda Burk each had 15 points, while Burk had 15 rebounds. The Knights were done in by 28 turnovers and 30.8 percent (16-for-52) shooting from the field.
