GRINNELL, Iowa - St. Norbert College shot almost 61 percent from the floor but it still wasn't good enough to hold off Grinnell College, with the host Pioneers putting up a 108-98 win in both teams' Midwest Conference opener at Darby Gym.

The Green Knights shot 60.9 percent (42-for-69) from the floor but still fell to 2-2 overall. Grinnell remained unbeaten at 5-0 overall.

St. Norbert got blitzed early, trailing 48-28 just 10 minutes into the game. But the Green Knights held the Pioneers to 16 points the rest of the half to trail just 64-63 at halftime. St. Norbert went on an impressive 24-6 run from the 10-minute mark to the 3:20 mark to get to within 54-52 but couldn't quite grab the lead.

The Green Knights managed to tie the game at 73-73 with 17:39 left, and later trailed 76-75 with 12:49 to go. Grinnell went on a quick 13-2 run, making all five of its field goals including three 3-pointers, to take an 89-77 lead with 10:42 to go. St. Norbert would get no closer than seven the rest of the way.

Paul Appleton led St. Norbert with 23 points, while Garrett Thorn finished with 17 points and 10 rebounds. Andrew Schwoerer added 16 points, Jack Whalen 14 and Brandon Gries 10. St. Norbert was just 13-for-24 (54.2 percent) at the free-throw line and had 32 turnovers.

Griffin Lentsch, who earlier this season scored 89 points in a game, pumped in 25 points. Luke Yeager finished with 21 points for the Pioneers who were 34-for-89 (38.2 percent) from the floor and 19-for-59 (32.2 percent) beyond the three-point arc.
