Late Rally Not Enough in Loss to Amherst

DAVIE, Fla. - St. Norbert College nearly rallied from a 23-point second-half deficit but eventually fell to unbeaten Amherst College 65-62 at the Florida Sunshine Shootout. The Lord Jeffs improved to 10-0 while the Green Knights dropped to 6-2. Both teams are receiving votes in the most recent D3hoops.com Top 25 poll.

Amherst led 39-25 at halftime and eventually pushed its lead to 53-30 with 16:34 left to play. From there St. Norbert would go on a 25-4 run over the next 10 minutes to pull within 57-55. Amherst would take a 61-55 lead with 5:00 to go with St. Norbert cutting it to 61-60 on a basket by Victoria Le Fevre and a 3-pointer by Morgan Strasser. Amherst hit a pair of free throws with 2:59 left before Strasser hit a jumper with 1:36 left to cut it to 63-62, but St. Norbert would get no closer.

St. Norbert fell into an early hole when it went on a 13-minute stretch without a field goal in the first half. The Green Knights led early 7-4 but would not hit another field goal until trailing 31-13 with 4:45 left before halftime. St. Norbert hit just 25 percent of its field goals in the first half, making 7 of 28 attempts. The Green Knights rebounded in the second half making 15 of 26 attempts to finish 40.7 percent from the floor in the game. Amherst shot 42.9 percent from the floor, the first opponent to outshoot St. Norbert from the floor this season.

Strasser led all scorers with 20 points, while Denise Heuser added 13 points and Le Fevre 10 for the Green Knights. Stefanie Reiff led Amherst with 19 points, while Shaina Pollack added 14 points and Sarah Leyman 13 for the Lord Jeffs.
