St. Norbert Splits With No. 8 UW-Stevens Point

DE PERE - St. Norbert College gained a doubleheader split with UW-Stevens Point, ranked No. 8 in the latest D3baseball.com Top 25, in non-conference action at Mel Nicks Field. St. Norbert captured a win in the opener with a 2-1 triumph in 10 innings before falling in the nightcap 10-3.

St. Norbert (7-8) got a gem from starting pitcher Kevin Nutley, who went nine innings and had to settle for a no-decision. Nutley allowed just five hits with two walks and five strikeouts before giving way to Travis Mason in the 10th.

The Green Knights scored the game-winning run in the bottom of the tenth on Garrick Fisher's RBI base hit up the middle with two outs to score Jordan Powers. St. Norbert scored in the first inning when Powers plated on a wild pitch. The Pointers (13-7) countered in the sixth on an RBI single by Justin Jirschele.

Matt Hannon was 3-for-5 for St. Norbert, which had eight hits.

In the nightcap, Stevens Point scored five unearned runs in the top of the fifth to take a 6-2 lead. The Green Knights were within 6-3 through seven innings before the Pointers scored once in the eighth and three in the ninth to seal the win.

Hannon, Fisher, Chris Hillesheim and Chad Ljunggren all head two hits apiece in the nightcap for St. Norbert, which left 12 runners on base. Josh Honzik took the loss, allowing five hits and six runs in 4 2/3 innings.
