Goals Spring Forth as St. Norbert Wins Twice

MADISON - St. Norbert College pumped in 15 goals during its opening weekend to the 2012 women's soccer season, with the Green Knights routing Lakeland College 10-2 on Saturday and tipping Edgewood College in a wild 5-4 affair Sunday.

The Green Knights led 6-1 at halftime against Lakeland and cruised to the win, outshooting the Muskies 30-4. Katie Vanden Avond scored four goals and two assists for a 10-point game. Kaitlyn Schmitz scored two goals, while Brittany Kosobucki had one goal and two assists. Nicole Beine, Kaitlyn Malliet and Emily Stepanek also scored goals, while Brooke Christensen had two assists.

Sarah Platzer made two saves for St. Norbert, while Molly Schroeder did not see a shot on goal with 26 minutes of relief in net.

St. Norbert held a 4-1 halftime lead against Edgewood but saw that lead evaporate, but got a breakaway goal from Vanden Avond with 4:30 remaining in regulation time for the game-winner.

Vanden Avond scored two goals less than two minutes apart in the early going to give St. Norbert a 2-1 lead. Schmitz followed at 11:15, and Zoe Kurth netted a goal at 17:14 for the 4-1 edge. Jaci Kulow had two assists.

Edgewood responded with three goals midway through the second half, before Vanden Avond responded with the game winner.

Vanden Avond now has seven goals in two games this season, while Schmitz has three.

Edgewood outshot St. Norbert 18-14, but Platzer made four saves in goal for the Green Knights.
