St. Norbert Finishes Third at MWC Tennis Team Championship

MADISON - The St. Norbert College men's tennis team finished in third place at the Midwest Conference Men's Tennis Team Championship at Nielsen Tennis Stadium.

The Green Knights lost their semifinal match against South Division runner-up Lake Forest College 5-0. St. Norbert rebounded to dispatch North Division runner-up 5-2 for third place. Grinnell College won the team championship by beating Lake Forest 5-1.

St. Norbert placed third for the fourth time in five years to match its best conference standing in program history.

Against Lake Forest, St. Norbert dropped all three doubles matches to put the Green Knights in a big 3-0 hole entering singles play. Four matches were left unfinished when Lake Forest picked up two singles wins at No. 1 and No. 4.

St. Norbert responded against Lawrence. Chris Schmitz and Mike Hyrczyk beat the Vikings' Travis Fondow and Lincoln Thomas 8-4 at No. 2 doubles. Eric Koppmann and Dan Richter claimed an 8-4 win over Nick Dufficy and Kyle Nodarse at No. 3 doubles.

In singles action, Schmitz by Dufficy 7-6 (7-3), 6-3 at No. 2 singles. Koppmann beat Nodarse in three sets at No. 5 singles 3-6, 6-1, 6-2. Nate Tackaberry dispatched Thomas 6-1, 6-0 at No. 6 singles.

The Green Knights finished their dual meet schedule at 14-13.
