Green Knights Open Florida Trip With Two Wins

KISSIMMEE, Fla. - St. Norbert College opened its 10-game road trip to the Rebel Games with a pair of wins on its first day of competition. The Green Knights defeated Albion College 15-0 in five innings and then tipped Bridgewater (Va.) College 3-2 in the nightcap.

St. Norbert (2-2) scored twice in the top of the sixth inning to eke past Bridgewater (5-3). MacKenzie Hazen had an RBI single to tie the game, and Jessica DeMeuse followed with an RBI single to plate Hazen, who had moved to second on the throw to the plate on her base hit.

Steph Brunette had an RBI single in the third inning, which was sandwiched between Bridgewater runs in the first and third innings.

The Green Knights had five hits in the game, led by Brunette's 2-for-4. Morgan Rusch earned the complete-game win by allowing four hits with two walks and six strikeouts.

St. Norbert pounded out 13 hits in the opener. The Green Knights scored eight runs in the bottom of the first inning and cruised to the victory. Abby Gildernick had a two-run single, and Brunette had a three-run double for big hits in the frame.

Gildernick had an RBI single in the second. Samantha Gross hit an RBI double, Hazen an RBI single and DeMeuse an RBI triple in the third inning. Mackenzie Dorow pinch hit to lead off the fourth inning and laced a home run in her first collegiate at bat to close out the scoring.

Gildernick was 3-for-3 with three RBIs against Albion. Brunette, Gross and Hazen all had two hits apiece. Shannen Schmidt spun a complete-game one-hit shutout, striking out seven. After allowing a single to Jessica Koehler to lead off the game, Schmidt did not allow another baserunner.
