Green Knights Win Twice in Land of Lincoln

MONMOUTH, Ill. - St. Norbert College posted a pair of non-conference wins Sunday, gaining a 5-1 triumph over Monmouth College and a 17-7 victory over the University of Chicago at Glasgow Field.

St. Norbert (14-6) snapped a 1-1 tie against Monmouth with two runs in the third inning. Nick Pierre had an RBI single and Travis Mason scored on an outfield error for a 3-1 lead. Jose Godinez hit a sacrifice fly in the fifth and seventh innings for the Green Knights' final two runs.

Mason and Troy Rottier each had two hits for St. Norbert, which had eight in the game. Kyle Mahlik went 7 1/3 innings in his first start of the season, allowing just one hit with three walks and two strikeouts. Matt Freeman finished off the combined 1-hitter with 1 2/3 innings of hitless relief.

St. Norbert unleashed a 16-hit barrage against Chicago (13-8). Rottier led off the game for the Green Knights with a home run for the second time in six games. Godinez had an RBI double, Mason a run-scoring single and Pierre a two-run home run in a five-run first. The Maroons cut the deficit to 6-4 in the third inning before the Green Knights answered with five runs in the bottom of the inning, with two coming on another home run by Pierre.

The Green Knights broke the game open with a four-run sixth inning, highlighted by RBI doubles from Brandon Kozinski and Rottier.

Pierre finished 3-for-4 with three runs scored and four RBIs. Chad Ljunggren was 3-for-5 with two RBIs. Rottier, Godinez and Mason all had two hits apiece, with Godinez stroking two doubles.

Brett Nohr improved to 3-1 on the season, scattering 13 hits in the complete-game win. He did not walk a batter and struck out one.
