St. Norbert Claims Tournament Title

DE PERE - A fifth-game rally in the final match of the St. Norbert Invitational propelled the host Green Knights to a perfect 4-0 record and the championship of their own tournament at Schuldes Sports Center.

St. Norbert rallied from a 10-7 deficit in the fifth game to post a thrilling match triumph over UW-River Falls 24-26, 25-16, 17-25, 25-21, 15-12. The Green Knights had beat Clarke College earlier in the day 25-11, 25-20, 25-19.

Following St. Norbert's 4-0 mark were Clarke and Northland College both at 3-1, UW-River Falls and Marian College both at 1-3 and Finlandia University at 0-4.

The Green Knights hit .370 (46-6-108) against Clarke to easily win the match. Danielle DeGroot and Sarah Sulentic each had 11 kills, while Sam Jungbluth added 10 kills. DeGroot had 12 blocks, Laura Ayello 39 assists and Ayello and Jungbluth each had nine digs.

St. Norbert dug in from a 10-7 deficit in the decisive game against River Falls. Both teams were tied at 12-12 before the Green Knights closed out the match with three straight points.

DeGroot had 18 kills against the Falcons, while Joanna Mamayek had 13 kills and Jungbluth added 12. Ayello registered 44 assists. Kim Angst had a team-high 17 digs from the libero spot, while Mamayek and Katie Casebolt each had eight blocks.

Jungbluth was named the tournament's most valuable player, while Mamayek was St. Norbert's other all-tournament selection. Also named to the all-tournament team were Ashley Shields of Clarke, Annie Koberstein of Northland, Michelle Zietlow of Marian and Gina DeRosa of UW-River Falls.
