Green Knights Open Season With Rout of Northland

DE PERE - St. Norbert College had little trouble cracking the victory column in its season opener, defeating a short-handed Northland College squad 107-21 in the opening round of the St. Norbert College Tip-Off Tournament in Schuldes Sports Center.

The Green Knights will face UW-Whitewater at 3 p.m. Saturday in the championship game. Northland, which dressed six players, will play St. Mary's (Ind.) College, which lost to Whitewater 107-61.

St. Norbert built an 18-2 lead five minutes into the game and eventually led 28-3 with 11:01 left in the first half. The Green Knights led 56-12 at halftime.

Fourteen of St. Norbert's 15 players cracked the scoring column, and no player saw more than 18 minutes of action. Seven different players cracked double figures in scoring. Mallory Nickerson scored 16 points in her first collegiate game. Tasha Giese score 13 points in nine minutes. Brianna Byrne and Megan McGoohan both had 12 points, while Morgan Heim and Kyra VandenHeuvel each netted 11 points. Heidi Van Sistine had 10 points and a team-high eight rebounds.

St. Norbert shot 64.5 percent (49-for-76) from the floor and outrebounded the Lumberjills 42-15.

Northland was led by Lilly Sandstrom's nine points and Erin Gilligan's eight points.
