DE PERE - Al Johnson, a five-year NFL veteran and standout Wisconsin Badger, has been named offensive line coach at St. Norbert College, head coach Steve Opgenorth announced.

Johnson, a Brussels native who was all-state at Southern Door High School, played for three NFL teams at guard and center from 2004-08. Johnson was a second-round draft choice (38th overall) by the Dallas Cowboys in 2003. He played in 48 games, starting 31, with the Cowboys from 2004-06. Johnson played and started in 14 games with the Arizona Cardinals in 2007 and played in four games with the Miami Dolphins in 2008.

"Al is a tremendous person with great character and leadership ability," Opgenorth said. "His experience in college and the NFL will enhance the development of our student-athletes on the offensive line. Al is a Northeast Wisconsin guy with a great background and understanding of football. He will add value to a tremendous coaching staff."

Johnson, 35, was a three-year starter at Wisconsin. As a senior captain, he was a second-team All-Big Ten selection and earned third-team All-America honors from The Sporting News. Johnson was honorable mention All-Big Ten as a sophomore and junior.

"I'm honored to have the opportunity to join St. Norbert College and work with current and future student-athletes," said Johnson, whose position is part-time. "I'm excited to work alongside Coach Opgenorth and his staff to continue and advance St. Norbert football and its long tradition of excellence on and off the field."

St. Norbert opens the 2014 season on Sept. 6 at Carthage College.
