DE PERE - St. Norbert College football has named Dan McCarty defensive coordinator and Greg Rabas as an offensive assistant, head coach Steve Opgenorth announced today.

McCarty arrives at St. Norbert after spending one year as the head coach at Southern Door High School, located in his native Door County. McCarty's collegiate experience includes coaching at UW-Stout from 2007-2010, where he coached offensive line and defensive line, and was the defensive coordinator in 2010.

"I am truly excited to add Dan and his family to the St. Norbert College football program," Opgenorth said. "A tireless recruiter and great defensive mind, Dan will allow our football program to reach its full potential for years to come. Dan understands the value placed on recruiting and developing young men of character. He will be a great asset to the St. Norbert College community.

"I would like to thank Coach Opgenorth and St. Norbert College for giving me the opportunity to join such a prestigious academic institution, one with a strong and successful football tradition," McCarty said. "I'm excited to get to work building great relationships with players and current coaching staff while leading the Green Knights defense."

McCarty also coached at his prep alma mater, Sturgeon Bay High School, from 2003-2006 and again in 2011. In his first stint with the Clippers, McCarty aided Sturgeon Bay to the 2004 WIAA Division 4 state championship as the offensive coordinator.

McCarty also coached under current Western Illinois University coach Bob Nielson at UW-Eau Clare and the University of Minnesota-Duluth. McCarty coached tight ends in 1998, and went with Nielson to Duluth to coach wide receivers and tight ends from 1999 to 2001. He also was the head coach of the Eidsvoll 1814s in Norway in the summer of 2001.

McCarty, a 2000 graduate of Minnesota-Duluth, played at Northern Michigan University before transferring to UW-Eau Claire to finish out his eligibility. He was a first-team All-WIAC selection in 1997 and was a third-team Division III All-America choice by Football Gazette.

Rabas, whose position is part-time, has been a successful high school coach in the Green Bay area for the past two decades. Rabas spent the last two seasons as the offensive coordinator at Bay Port High School, with the Pirates setting school records for points scoring and total offense in 2013.

"I feel blessed to add Greg to our staff," Opgenorth said. "Greg has had a tremendous career as a high school football coach and I've been impressed with his character and commitment to excellence. He appreciates the value of football in Northeast Wisconsin and will enhance our offensive mindset and production as a football program."

Rabas was the head coach at De Pere High School for 10 seasons, compiling a 60-26 record in his last eight seasons with three conference championships and eight WIAA playoff appearances. In 2007, his final season with the Redbirds, Rabas coached Drew Nowak, who spent the 2013 season with the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Rabas, a Kewaunee native, played tight end for the University of Nebraska in 1978 and 1979, and then finished his collegiate career at the University of Wisconsin from 1980-82.
