WHITEWATER - St. Norbert College battled the third-ranked team in the country but came up just a bit short in a 6-2 loss to UW-Whitewater in the first round of the NCAA Division III Midwest Regional at Prucha Field at Miller Stadium.

The Green Knights (23-15) will now face Heidelberg College in a loser's bracket game at noon Thursday.

Whitewater (37-7), ranked No. 3 in the D3baseball.com Top 25, drew first blood scoring three runs in the bottom of the second inning. The Warhawks collected four hits in the inning but two St. Norbert errors led to a pair of runs being unearned.

St. Norbert answered with two runs in the top of the third inning. With two outs, Chad Ljunggren singled sharply to left field. Travis Mason followed with a booming home run to right field to get the Green Knights back into the game at a 3-2 deficit.

The Warhawks pulled away by scoring single runs in the fifth and sixth innings. St. Norbert had the leadoff hitter reach in its halves of the fifth and sixth innings but couldn't string a rally together.

St. Norbert, still trailing 5-2, started the eighth inning with a Derek Klegin walk and another single by Ljunggren. Mason popped to short, Alex Larsen lined out to the right-field corner and Nick Pierre hit a comebacker to end the inning. Whitewater added a run in the bottom of the eighth for the game's final margin.

Whitewater outhit St. Norbert 13-6. Mason was 3-for-4, while Ljunggren was 2-for-4. Kevin Nutley took the complete-game loss for the Green Knights, walking three and striking out six. Brock Liston got the win for Whitewater, allowing five hits in seven innings with no walks and seven strikeouts.
