St. Norbert Wraps Up Outright MWC Championship

BELOIT - St. Norbert College clinched its fifth outright Midwest Conference championship in the last six years with a 74-53 win over Beloit College at Flood Arena.

The Green Knights (19-1, 15-0 MWC), ranked No. 9 in the D3hoops.com Top 25, defeated a Midwest Conference opponent for the 39th consecutive time. St. Norbert never trailed and was tied only once, at 2-2.

St. Norbert led 10-9 in the early going before fashioning an 11-2 run to take a 21-11 lead on Steven Hofacker's layup at the 8:39 mark. The Buccaneers cut the deficit down to four points late in the first half at 29-25, but St. Norbert went on a 7-0 run to close out the period. Andrew Schwoerer connected on a 3-pointer for a 33-25 lead, and Ben Bobinski made three free throws with eight seconds left for the 36-25 halftime score.

The Green Knights led 46-35 with 13:20 remaining and went on a 10-2 run to seal the outcome. Austin Elliott and Bryan Dalton both had 3-pointers during the spurt, which put St. Norbert ahead 56-37 with 9:06 to go.

Dalton came off the bench to lead St. Norbert with 22 points. Dalton, who had six rebounds, had a perfect shooting night by making all eight field-goal attempts (two 3-pointers) and all four free throws. Schwoerer finished with 14 points and Hofacker had 11 points.

St. Norbert, the nation's top field-goal shooting team, had another hot night from the floor by making 29 of 47 field-goal attempts - a 61.7 percent clip.

Steve McAfee was the only Beloit player to reach double figures with 22 points. The Buccaneers shot 19-for-45 (42.2 percent) from the floor and were outrebounded 34-18.
