Green Knights Open MWC Play at Ripon

RIPON - St. Norbert College opened Midwest Conference North Division play and was swept in a doubleheader by Ripon College by scores of 7-6 and 6-1 at Francis Field.

The Green Knights (7-9, 0-2 MWC North) led the opener 3-0. Tyler Banovich had an RBI groundout and Tyler Brown an RBI single to give St. Norbert a 2-0 lead in the first inning. The Green Knights plated another run in the fourth inning but the Red Hawks answered with four runs in the fourth inning.

Ripon scored single runs in the fifth and sixth innings to take a 6-3 lead, but St. Norbert answered wtih two runs in the seventh. Brandon Kozinski and Banovich had RBI singles. The Green Knights had the bases loaded with one out in the seventh and eighth innings but couldn't push any more runs across.

Troy Rottier hit a solo home run in the ninth inning to tie the game, but Ripon scored the game-winning hit on an infield hit in the bottom half of the inning.

Kozinski, Banovich, Rottier and Brown all had two hits apiece for the Green Knights, who left 10 runners on. Nate Schadrie took the loss, allowing two hits and one run in 2 2/3 innings. Jake McMahon started and allowed six runs and seven hits in six innings.

In the nightcap, St. Norbert scored a run on a bases-loaded walk in the fourth inning to lead 1-0 but wouldn't score again. Ripon scored twice in the fourth inning to take a lead it would never relinquish.

Spencer Larson was 2-for-3 for the Green Knights, who had six hits. Matt Freeman took the loss, allowing seven hits and six runs in 6 1/3 innings, walking four and striking out eight.
