St. Norbert Splits on Day Two of MWC Classic

JANESVILLE - St. Norbert College split its pair of games on the second day of the Midwest Conference Classic, topping Knox College 8-1 before falling to Lake Forest College 9-4 at Janesville Youth Sports Complex.

The Green Knights (9-13, 4-2 MWC North) slowly pulled away from Knox in the opener. Codi Jenshak drove in a run in the first inning with an infield single. Knox scored once in the first inning, but St. Norbert collected two runs in the second inning on a two-run double by Samantha Gross.

St. Norbert scored three times in the third inning on one hit. Two runs scored on an outfield error and MacKenzie Hazen scored on a wild pitch. Hazen's RBI single in the fifth inning scored a run, while Leigh Grall's RBI double in the sixth plated another.

Francesca Marrese allowed just four hits in the complete-game win, walking three and striking out four. Jenshak and Grall were both 2-for-4 for the Green Knights, who had 10 hits.

Against Lake Forest (21-4, 7-0 MWC South), the Green Knights trailed 5-4 in the fifth inning before the Foresters pulled away with four runs in their half of the fifth.

Lake Forest scored twice in the second and three times in the third to take a 5-0 lead. The Green Knights answered with a solo home run from Jessica DeMeuse in the fourth inning. Hazen drove in the first of three runs in the fifth inning with a double. Tayler Long added an RBI single and Jenshak a run-scoring double to cap the rally.

Jenshak was 2-for-3 and Long 2-for-4 for St. Norbert, which had seven hits. Morgan Rusch took the loss, allowing 11 hits and nine runs with one walk and four strikeouts in 4 1/3 innings pitched.
