Green Knights Finish 4-2 at MWC Classic

JANESVILLE - St. Norbert College finished 4-2 in the Midwest Conference Classic following a split on the third day of action at the Janesville Youth Sports Complex. The Green Knights opened with a 13-9 loss to Grinnell College before tipping Monmouth College 4-3.

Against Monmouth, St. Norbert rallied from a 3-0 deficit. The Green Knights scored their first run on an Emily Laufer solo home run in the bottom of the fourth inning. St. Norbert picked up three runs in the fifth inning when MacKenzie Hazen cranked a three-run home run to push the Green Knights ahead.

Monmouth loaded the bases in the top of the seventh inning with one out, but couldn't score the tying run.

Hazen and Codi Jenshak were both 2-for-3 for St. Norbert, which had six hits. Haley Grunwald earned the win by allowing just one hit in two innings of relief.

Two big innings spelled doom for St. Norbert against Grinnell. St. Norbert took a 2-0 lead in the first inning on a two-run double by Jessica DeMeuse, but the Pioneers answered with eight runs on eight hits in the top of the second inning.

St. Norbert answered with two runs in the second inning when Hazen drove in a run with a single and then later came around to score on a wild pitch. The Green Knights cut their deficit to 8-7 with thee runs in the fifth inning. Laufer drove in a run with a double, Gina Mastrodomenico had an RBI groundout and Hazen hit a solo home run.

Grinnell would score five runs int he top of the seventh to take a 13-7 lead. St. Norbert would get two runs in the bottom of the seventh on an RBI double by Tayler Long and a Samantha Gross RBI single.

Hazen was 4-for-4 with thee runs scored and Long was 3-for-5 with two runs scored. Grunwald took the loss.
