St. Norbert Splits During Iowa Trip

MOUNT VERNON, Iowa - St. Norbert College split a pair of key Midwest Conference matches in Iowa, dropping a 5-4 heartbreaker to Grinnell College and rallied to beat Cornell College 6-3.

The Green Knights (8-3, 6-1 MWC) are now one match behind Grinnell (7-2, 6-0) in the league standings with three matches remaining.

Grinnell swept the three doubles matches to take a 3-0 lead and the Green Knights couldn't recover. St. Norbert won the top four flights in singles play. Elizabeth Manlick beat Judith Fan 6-3, 4-6, 6-0 at No. 1, while Erika Chitko beat Virginia Purcell 6-2, 6-4 at No. 2. Katherine Ake defeated Megan Jans 6-1, 2-6, 6-3 at No. 3 and Katlyn Gahan topped Amelia Cogan 6-4, 1-6, 7-6 (7-0) at No. 4.

Against Cornell, St. Norbert took two doubles points. Manlick and Anna Gosz beat Julia Thome and Gabriella Ferro 8-6 at No. 2. Gahan and Catherine Schaupp topped Abby Bridgett and Janice Elkerton 8-2 at No. 3.

Chitko defeated Shashanna Moll 6-3, 6-3 at No. 2 singles, with Ake beating Sophie Robertson 7-5, 6-2 at No. 3. Gosz topped Gracie Benton 0-6, 6-4, 7-6 (7-5) at No. 5 and Stephanie Doerfert beat Bridgett 6-7 (6-8), 6-2, 6-3 at No. 6.
