St. Norbert Takes Control of MWC North Race With Rout of Ripon

RIPON - St. Norbert College took command of the Midwest Conference North Division standings with an impressive 48-14 defeat of Ripon College at Ingalls Field.

The Green Knights (6-0, 2-0 MWC North) are the last unbeaten team in conference play in the North Division after topping the Red Hawks (4-2, 1-1). St. Norbert scored touchdowns on its first three possessions for a 21-0 lead after the first quarter and was never seriously threatened thereafter.

Ripon on the coin toss but deferred its choice. St. Norbert returned the opening kickoff to its own 43-yard line and scored on the game's first play from scrimmage when Jack Becker found Matt Freeman on a 57-yard touchdown pass 16 seconds into the game.

The Red Hawks tried to counter with a long pass of their own on their first scrimmage play, but Frank Laterza intercepted the ball at the St. Norbert 28-yard line. St. Norbert then used 14 plays to march 72 yards to score its second touchdown - a Matt Harrity 13-yard scoring strike to Freeman on a fake field goal with 7:46 left in the quarter.

St. Norbert allowed Ripon just six plays on its next possession before getting the ball back. The Green Knights scored on the last play of the first quarter when Brad Boockmeier threw a three-yard touchdown pass to Becker on an option pass. The Green Knights outgained the Red Hawks 221-28 in total offense in the first quarter.

Ripon put together its first scoring drive to start the second quarter, with Logan Grahn scoring on a 7-yard run at the 10:07 mark. The Green Knights' only score in the second quarter came on a 26-yard field goal by Spenser Thompson Meyers with 10 seconds left in the first half for a 24-3 edge.

St. Norbert broke the game open in the third quarter. Becker hit Brett Olson for a 19-yard touchdown at the 10:05 mark and Thompson-Meyers boomed a 42-yard field-goal with 5:28 left in the period for a 34-7 lead.

Boockmeier scored on a 4-yard run just 1 minute into the fourth quarter and Becker found Drew Chevarria for an 18-yard touchdown pass with 10:07 to go. Ripon scored a consolation touchdown with 1:38 left on a Griffin McNeal 4-yard pass to Brandon Barnes.

St. Norbert outgained Ripon 487-214 in total offense, including a 260-179 edge on the ground. Boockmeier rushed 15 times for 105 yards, while Elijah Fort added 67 yards on 10 carries and Becker 52 yards on 10 carries. Becker completed 17 of 24 passes for 205 yards and three touchdowns. Marty Franzkowiak had four receptions for 44 yards, while Freeman caught three passes for 81 yards and two touchdowns.

Jacob Wells led the St. Norbert defense with eight tackles. Ryan Grandlic added seven tackles and an interception. Laterza finished with two interceptions to bring his season total to a team-high five.
