Green Knights Post Three MWC Singles Champions

MADISON - St. Norbert College claimed half of the 2016 Midwest Conference Singles Championships when it had three champions crowned at Nielsen Tennis Stadium.

Katherine Ake, Katlyn Gahan and Meg Witt won conference championships at Nos. 2, 4 and 6 singles, respectively. It was the first MWC singles championship for all three.

Ake avenged a regular-season loss to Grinnell College's Amelia Cogan with a 6-2, 6-4 win in the championship match at No. 2. Ake dispatched Illinois College's Sally Kate Hixson 6-0, 6-1 in the quarterfinals and Lake Forest College's Allison Watts 6-1, 6-3 in the semifinals.

Gahan topped Grinnell's Anushka Joshi 6-4, 6-3 in the championship of No. 4. Gahan blanked Illinois College's Jovanna Chavez 6-0, 6-0 in the quarterfinals and Cornell College's Abbey Nelson 6-3, 6-4 in the semifinals.

Witt beat Cornell's Anne Seng 6-2, 6-1 in the championship match at No. 6. Witt routed Ripon College's Katelyn Peroutka 6-0, 6-0 in the quarterfinals and then beat Grinnell's Shannon Hautzinger 6-0, 6-2 in the semifinals.

Ashley Randazzo was the runner-up in the No. 5 flight, falling to Grinnell's Lily Hamilton 6-4, 6-2 in the championship. Randazzo beat Ripon's Madeline Salzer 6-0, 6-1 in the quarterfinals and Cornell's Raquel Ruiz 6-4, 6-4 in the semifinals.

Elizabeth Manlick fell in the semifinals of No. 1 to Cornell's Julie Thome 6-2, 6-3. Manlick defeated Knox College's Emily Miller 6-0, 6-4 in the quarterfinals.

Anna Gosz also succumbed in the semifinals of No. 3 to Lake Forest's Lucia Stumbras 4-6, 6-3, 6-2. Gosz topped Knox's Savannah Sailors 6-1, 6-0 in the quarterfinals.
