St. Norbert Holds On to Top Dominican

DE PERE - St. Norbert College held off a furious Dominican University rally to post a 77-68 non-conference win at Schuldes Sports Center.

The Green Knights improved to 3-1 despite Dominican making 14 of its first 16 shots in the second half. The visiting Stars fell to 1-4.

St. Norbert came out with a strong start, jumping out to a 19-5 lead in the game's first eight minutes. The Green Knights pushed the advantage out to 40-16 with 1:37 left in the first half before Dominican hit two consecutive 3-pointers to settle on a 42-22 halftime deficit.

Dominican came out firing in the second half, getting to within 50-39 with 13:16 left to play. The Stars scored on their first 14 possessions of the second half but during that run did not get closer than 11 points thanks to St. Norbert shooting 54.2 percent from the floor for the game.

The Green Knights canned six 3-pointers in the first half and seven for the game. Sophomore guard Dave Wipperfurth posted a career-high 19 points, and was 7-for-8 at the free-throw line. Mike Dowden added 11 points, while Paul Mallers chipped in with 10 points.

The Stars shot 73.9 percent from the floor in the second half, makign 17 of 23 shots. Dominican shot 55.8 percent from the game after shooting 7-for-20 in the second half. Kyle Tipton led Dominican with 19 points, while Jovan Turley added 16 and Darrius Nelson 11.
