Hot Start Lifts Green Knights Past Foresters

LAKE FOREST, Ill. - St. Norbert College took control in the first five minutes and never relinquished its lead as it went on to claim a 64-49 win over Lake Forest College in a Midwest Conference game at the LFC Sports Center.

With the win, the Green Knights (15-5, 12-3 MWC) clinched their 15th consecutive berth in the Midwest Conference Tournament.

St. Norbert jumped out to an 11-0 lead in the first 4 minutes 18 seconds of the game. The Green Knights made their first three field-goal attempts and forced Lake Forest into six turnovers on its first six possessions.

Jelena Ostojic got the run started with a layup, followed by a conventional three-point play by Brianna Byrne. Regan Carmichael's basket put St. Norbert ahead 7-0. Jill Kleiman followed with a pair of free throws and then hit a basket of her own for the 11-point lead with 5:42 left int he first quarter. The Green Knights would lead 18-5 after the first quarter.

The Foresters would cut their deficit down to six points at 20-14 midway through the second quarter, but a 3-pointer by Kleiman stemmed the tide. Mallory Nickerson's hoop gave St. Norbert a 27-16 lead late in the quarter before it settled on a 27-18 halftime lead.

Kleiman's free throw on the first possession of the third quarter put St. Norbert ahead by 10 points, and the Green Knights would lead by double digits the remainder of the game.

St. Norbert shot 40 percent (22-for-55) from the floor and outrebounded Lake Forest 41-34. Byrne and Carmichael paced the Green Knights with 15 points apiece, while Kleiman added 12 points. Sarah Ratajczyk grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds.

Lake Forest shot 34 percent (17-for-50) from the floor. Hannah O'Day led the Foresters with 18 points, while Bridget Bilek added 14 points.
