St. Norbert Drops Pair of One-Run Games to Open 2017

KISSIMMEE, Fla. - St. Norbert College opened the 2017 season with a pair of hard-fought one-run losses. The Green Knights lost 6-5 to Springfield College and then fell to Illinois Wesleyan University 4-3.

St. Norbert fell behind 1-0 in the first inning of the opener but immediately countered with two runs in its half of the frame on a two-run single by Amy McBride. The Green Knights added to their lead with a Maria Reiter RBI single in the third inning for a 3-1 edge.

Springfield tied the game at 3-3 after single runs in the fourth and fifth innings and then took a 6-3 lead with three runs in the top of the seventh. St. Norbert mounted a last-ditch rally in the bottom of the seventh, getting a two-run double from Amanda Diedrich with one out. But Diedrich was stranded at second base to end the game.

Brianna Braeger led the Green Knights, going 4-for-4 with a double and two run scored. Diedrich was 2-for-4 with two doubles, while Randi Morack was 2-for-4 with two runs scored.

Emma Molenhouse took the loss for St. Norbert, allowing three runs on four hits in two innings of relief.

In the nightcap, Illinois Wesleyan scored twice in the first inning but St. Norbert knotted the game 2-2 in the second inning. Lexy Campshure had an RBI single and Leigh Grall drove in a run on a fielder's choice.

The Titans pulled ahead with single runs in the fifth and sixth innings for a 4-2 lead. St. Norbert scored a run in top of the seventh when Tia Danforth walked with the bases loaded and two outs, but the Green Knights could plate the tying run.

St. Norbert had six hits in the game, all singles.

Sydney Pfotenhauer took the loss for St. Norbert, allowing two runs on four hits in two innings of relief.
