Hetzel, Doerfert Charge to MWC No. 3 Doubles Championship

MADISON - Despite their No. 4 seeding, Claire Hetzel and Stephanie Doerfert won three matches en route to claiming the championship at No. 3 flight at the Midwest Conference Doubles Championships at Nielsen Tennis Stadium.

Hetzel and Doerfert each claimed their first MWC doubles title with a thrilling 9-8 (3) win over Grinnell College's Lily Hamilton and Anushka Joshi in the championship match.

Hetzel and Doerfert toppled the No. 1 seeding of Cornell College's Katie Mintel and Janice Elkerton with a convincing 8-3 semifinal win. Hetzel and Doerfert won their quarterfinal match with an 8-3 win over Illinois College's Kalisa Goertz and Madelyn Deardorff.

Both the Nos. 1 and 2 doubles flights entries were eliminated in the semifinals.

Meg Witt and Sofie Koppman lost to Cornell's Julia Thome and Raquel Ruiz 8-5 in the No. 1 semifinals. Witt and Koppmann defeated Lawrence University's Lindsay Holsen and Katie Nottberg 8-4 in the quarterfinal round.

At No. 2 doubles, Jordyn Lawatsch and Lauren Paulson lost an 8-1 decision to Grinnell's Ali Hickey and Abby Nielsen in the semifinals. Lawatsch and Paulson defeated Monmouth College's Morgan Holle and Natalie Curtis 8-4 in the semifinals.
