Green Knights Hold Off UW-Platteville

RIVER FALLS - St. Norbert College held off a furious rally by UW-Platteville but held on for a 70-67 season-opening win at the UW-River Falls Tournament at Page Arena.

The Green Knights held a 63-51 win with 6:01 remaining after Sarah Wiseman's basket. Platteville would go on a 9-0 run over the next four minutes to get back into the game as St. Norbert missed seven consecutive field-goal attempts to cut the deficit to 63-60 with 2:17 left.

Sarah Wiseman's hoop with 1:46 left put St. Norbert back ahead by five at 65-60, but the Pioneers wouldn't go away and get to within 68-67 on Rachel Emendorfer's 3-pointer with 9 seconds left. Regan Carmichael made a pair of free throws for the Green Knights with three seconds left, and Platteville's Blaire Lutes missed a 3-pointer as time expired.

St. Norbert never trailed, building a 20-13 lead after the first quarter. The Green Knights would lead by as many as 13 points at 30-17 with 3:21 left in the second quarter before settling on a 33-24 halftime lead.

Carmichael's 3-pointer to open the second half put the Green Knights ahead by 12 at 36-24, but Platteville would counter with an 18-6 run for the game's only tie at 42-42 with 4:56 left in the third quarter. St. Norbert took control again, going up 49-43 at the 2:42 mark on a conventional three-point play by Sarah Neumann. The Green Knights led 55-46 after the third quarter.

Carmichael led St. Norbert with 24 points, while Wiseman added 18 points. The Green Knights shot 37.9 percent (22-for-58) from the floor but were 21-for-28 at the free-throw line.

Platteville shot 45.8 percent (27-for-59) from the floor but was plagued by 23 turnovers. Morgan Horstman led the Pioneers with 21 points.
