Green Knights Hold Off Grinnell

DE PERE - St. Norbert College held off a game Grinnell College foe and went on to claim a 97-85 Midwest Conference win at Connie Tilley Court at Jim Kress Gymnasium at Mulva Family Fitness & Sports Center.

The Green Knights (11-2, 6-0 MWC), coupled with Ripon College's 83-69 win over Lake Forest College, now reside in sole possession of first place in the Midwest Conference.

Grinnell (8-4, 3-3) led St. Norbert 75-73 with 6:35 left after a pair of Vinny Curta free-throws. The Green Knights would tie the game on a pair of Connor Curtis free throws and took the lead on two Joe Lemon charity tosses on the next two possessions. That started a 16-3 St. Norbert run over 4:17 aided by Grinnell missing eight consecutive field-goal attempts. The Green Knights were 14-for-15 at the free-throw line over the final 6:24.

St. Norbert led 35-34 in a slow-paced first half. The Green Knights' defense held Grinnell to 26.5 percent (9-for-34) from the floor in the first 20 minutes, but the home team committed 19 turnovers to stymie their offense.

Grinnell took its biggest lead of the game at 40-35 after the Pioneers canned a pair of 3-pointers to open the second half. St. Norbert went on a 19-8 run over the next 5:44 to take a 54-48 lead with 13:37 to go. St. Norbert would eventually lead 67-58 with 9:31 left before Grinnell went on a 17-6 run over the next 2:56 to take its last lead of the game.

St. Norbert shot 63.3 percent (31-for-49) from the floor for the game, including 19-for-27 (70.4 percent) in the second half. St. Norbert was 31-for-36 (86.1 percent) at the free-throw line. The Green Knights also committed just seven turnovers in the second half. Mitchell Reinthaler finished with 21 points and 10 rebounds, while Curtis added 15 points. Joe Lemon had 12 points and 10 rebounds, while D.J. DeValk added 12 points, six rebounds and six assists. St. Norbert held a commanding 44-21 rebounding advantage.

Grinnell shot 37.9 percent (25-for-66) from the floor and was 19-for-50 (38 percent) from beyond the three-point arc. Curta led the Pioneers with 18 points, while Sean Cullinane added 15 points and Nathan Balcom 14 points.
