Green Knights Fall In MWC Tournament

MONMOUTH, Ill. - St. Norbert College lost 82-60 to Ripon College in a semifinal game in the Midwest Conference Tournament at Monmouth College's Glennie Gym.

The Green Knights (19-7) were done in by a blistering second half by the Red Hawks (18-6), who made 15 of 23 (65.2 percent) field-goal attempts in the final 20 minutes to rupture a seven-point halftime lead.

St. Norbert got off to a good start, leading 14-7 nearly eight minutes into the game following a Mitchell Reinthaler 3-pointer. The score was tied 24-24 with 3:09 left in the first half before the Red Hawks went on a 11-4 run to close out the half for a 35-28 lead.

The Green Knights trailed 45-39 after a Wade Geenen basket with 15:12 to go, but Ripon went on a big 21-4 run over the next seven minutes to lead 66-43 and effectively decide the outcome.

St. Norbert shot 39.2 percent from the floor, making 20 of 51 field-goal attempts. Reinthaler led the Green Knights with 24 points and eight rebounds. Reinthaler finished the season with 205 rebounds, becoming the first Green Knights since 1998 and only the second in 42 seasons to register a 200-rebound season. Geenen and Connor Curtis added 10 points apiece.

Ripon shot 51 percent from the floor, finishing 26-for-51 from the field. The Red Hawks were also 20 of 23 at the free-throw line. Isaac Masters led Ripon with 22 points.

Prior to the game, Taylor Penn was awarded the MWC Elite 20 Award for men's basketball for the second consecutive season. The junior biology major earned the distinction after holding the highest grade point average among those competing at this weekend's tournament. Penn is the sixth St. Norbert athlete to earn a MWC Elite 20 Award in the 2017-18 academic year.
