St. Norbert Sweeps Wartburg, Dubuque to Open 2009 Season

MADISON - St. Norbert College picked up a pair of dual-meet victories against Wartburg College and the University of Dubuque in opening the 2009 season at the University of Wisconsin's Nielsen Tennis Center.

The Green Knights topped Wartburg 7-2 before going on to beat Dubuque 8-1. St. Norbert swept the Nos. 2 through 5 singles matches in both duals, and ended up sweeping the three doubles matches against Dubuque.

Jordan Bauer topped Wartburg's Andrew Kahler 6-1, 6-3 at No. 2 singles, while Mike Hyrczyk topped James Nguyen 6-0, 6-2 at No. 4 singles. Derek Harrington defeated Pat Mullen 6-2, 6-3 at No. 3 singles, while Nate Tackaberry tipped Aaron Masterson 7-5, 6-2 at No. 5. Matt Schmitz posted the win at No. 6 with a 6-3, 6-0 win over Chris Gustas.

Hyrczyk and Bauer defeated Chris Buckingham and Mullen at No. 1 doubles 8-3, while Harrington and Ethan Kadow won at No. 3 doubles 8-1 over Masterson and Gustas.

Bauer had a convincing 6-0, 6-0 win over Girodana Dasio to get things started in singled action against Dubuque. Harrington beat Cory McCarthy 6-2, 6-1 at No. 3, and Hyrczyk defeated David Jacobsen 6-0, 7-5 at No. 4 singles. Tackaberry beat Jonathan Kroll 6-0, 6-3 at No. 5 singles, while Kadow clipped Chris Matteson 6-2, 6-1 at No. 6.

Bauer and Hyrczyk needed a tiebreaker to beat Austin Stewart and McCarthy at No. 1 doubles 9-8 (7-2). Eric Koppmann and Tackaberry beat Claudio Giraldi and Matteson 8-5 at No. 2, while Harrington and Schmitz topped Jacobsen and Kroll 8-2 at No. 3.
