St. Norbert Pulls Out OT Thriller at Monmouth

MONMOUTH, Ill. - St. Norbert College won its seventh game in its last eight outings as the Green Knights pulled out a 73-58 overtime win over Monmouth College in a Midwest Conference men's basketball game at Glennie Gym. The Green Knights improved to 9-6 overall and 5-3 in the MWC after a 1-4 overall start. Monmouth fell to 4-11, 4-5.

St. Norbert had complete command of the overtime session. Tom Katzfey hit a pair of free throws on the first possession of overtime, and Paul Mallers connected on a 3-pointer 55 seconds into overtime for a five-point lead. St. Norbert would push the advantage to 64-55 with another basket by Katzfey and two free throws by Mike Dowden. The Green Knights were 3-for-4 from the floor and 11-for-12 at the free-throw line in overtime.

The Green Knights led 42-33 with 10:17 left to play in regulation before Monmouth rallied with an 11-2 run to tie the game at 44-44 with 5:15 to go. Monmouth led 53-52 with 1:00 left on a Joe Terwelp basket, but Eric Bieniasz hit a big 3-pointer with 45 seconds left for a 55-53 St. Norbert lead. Blaise Rogers hit a basket with 33 seconds left for the game's eighth tie, but Tony Jandron's jumper at the regulation missed to force the extra period.

Katzfey led the way for St. Norbert, netting 18 points and 10 rebounds. Dowden scored 16 points and was 3-for-5 on 3-pointers. Bieniasz finished with 15 points and Mallers 10 points for the Green Knights, who shot 45.3 percent from the floor and 18-for-21 at the free-throw line.

Monmouth's starting lineup was held to a total of 19 points. Terwelp led the Scots with 22 points off the bench. Monmouth shot 40.7 percent from the floor and was 9-for-18 at the free-throw line.
