Green Knights Pound Lawrence to Move to 20-2 on the Season

DE PERE - St. Norbert College garnered its third 20-win season in program history with a convincing 68-50 Midwest Conference win at Schuldes Sports Center.

The Green Knights, ranked 14th in the D3hoops.com Top 25, improved to 20-2 overall and 14-1 in the MWC. St. Norbert joins the 1984 and 2002 teams, both of which qualified for the NCAA Division III Tournament, as men's basketball 20-game winners. Lawrence, the defending MWC co-champion, fell to 10-11, 7-7.

A focused squad jumped to a 10-0 lead in the first 2 minutes 36 seconds of the game. Paul Mallers buried a 3-poitner on the game's opening possession, followed by a layup by Steve Papke, a 3-pointer by Chris Peterson and a basket by Peterson. Lawrence would cut the deficit to 12-7 but St. Norbert went on a 9-0 run for a 21-7 lead with 10:11 left on a Dave Wipperfurth basket. The Green Knights would go almost six minutes without a basket, but John Taylor broke the drought with a hoop for a 23-13 advantage with 4:14 to go. St. Norbert led 32-20 at halftime.

Leading 37-24 with 17:24 left, the Green Knights would go on a 12-0 run to seal the game. A Papke jumper, a 3-pointer and basket bvy Peterson, a Dietz hoop and a 3-pointer by Wipperfurth put St. Norbert ahead 49-24 with 14:36 left. The Vikings would get no closer than 18 points the rest of the way.

St. Norbert shot 45.8 percent from the floor, making 22 of 48 shots. Peterson led the way with 15 points, while James Pfitzinger had a career-high 11 points and four blocked shots along with five rebounds. Eleven Green Knights reached the scoring column.

Lawrence was held to 20-for-61 (32.8 percent) shooting from the floor, and 2 of 14 from beyond the three-point arc. John Dekker was the only Viking to reach double figures with 12 points.
