St. Norbert Wins Eighth NCHA Peters Cup Championship in Dominating 7-1 Win Over UW-River Falls

GREEN BAY - St. Norbert College extended its record for most Northern Collegiate Hockey Association post-season championships with a 7-1 win over UW-River Falls to claim its eighth Peters Cup title.

The Green Knights (21-3-3), ranked third in the USCHO.com Division III Poll, clinched an automatic berth into the NCAA Division III Tournament. River Falls, ranked 12th by USCHO.com, saw its season end at 18-9-2.

St. Norbert won the game in dominating fashion, outshooting the Falcons by an amazing 42-11 count.

The Falcons were basically out of the game in the first 10 minutes. Nick Tabisz fired in a bomb from the blueline at 3 minutes 19 seconds of the first period for a power-play goal and a 1-0 lead. Shane Wheeler then redirected a shot at 9:01 of the first for a 2-0 advantage.

St. Norbert pulled ahead 4-0 with two goals 30 seconds apart in the second period. Dylan Exton and Scott Pulak scored at 6:33 and 7:03, respectively, to give the Green Knights their two-period lead.

Mike Bernardy put St. Norbert up 5-0 at 5:33 of the third on a long drive, but the Falcons' Tyler Czuba scored unassisted at 9:10. Matt Boyd scored 52 seconds later to get the goal back, and Jason Nopper closed out the scoring with a long power-play goal at 17:15 for his first goal of the year.

Tabisz, Tyler Allen and Alain Joanette each had two assists for St. Norbert, which was 2-for-8 on the power play. River Falls was 0-for-6 on the power play.

B.J. O'Brien made 10 saves for St. Norbert to improve to 21-2-3 on the year. Bo Storozuk worked the first 29:19 for the Falcons, allowing four goals with 15 saves. Eric Babcook finished up and made 20 saves in 30:41 of work.

NCAA Division III Tournament pairings will be announced Sunday night (March 7).
