Hillesheim Leads St. Norbert Past UW-Stevens Point in Doubleheader Split
STEVENS POINT St. Norbert College received a stellar pitching performance from junior Trevin Hillesheim to lead to a doubleheader split with UW-Stevens Point at University Field.
The Green Knights (7-5) claimed the opener 6-1 behind 7 1/3 strong innings from Hillesheim before dropping the nightcap to the Pointers (9-3) by an 11-1 score. The doubleheader was played in sub-freezing conditions, with the first-pitch temperature of the opener at 29 degrees.
Hillesheim allowed just six hits and one run with three walks and six strikeouts to improve to 1-1. Justin Wotachek worked the last 1 2/3 innings, not allowing a base runner to close out the win.
St. Norbert scored one run in the fourth inning when Tony Jandron scampered home on a passed ball. The Green Knights scored four times in the fifth take a 5-0 lead. Ryan Gusick had a leadoff double, and Jordan Powers reached on an erred sacrifice bunt. Following an out, Jared Yost squeezed in Gusick and beat out the bunt. Jandron followed with a booming three-run home run to left.
The Pointers scored one run in the sixth, but St. Norbert got the run back in the top of the ninth. Ryan Kehl led off with a single and was bunted to second by Gusick. Kehl then stole third base and was squeezed in by Powers.
Brandon Hintz was 2-for-3 with two doubles for St. Norbert, while Kehl and Jandron were both 2-for-4.
In the nightcap, St. Norbert drew first blood when Hintz scored on an RBI groundout by Kyle Johnsen. The Pointers put together a six-run fourth inning, with a three-run, two-out triple by Jeremy Richter the big blow. Hintz was 2-for-2 with two stolen bases for St. Norbert.
