Russ Schmelzer

Head Athletic Trainer

Russ Schmelzer is in his 33rd year as the head certified athletic trainer for all of St. Norbert College’s 20 sports. He is the primary athletic trainer for softball, men's and women's soccer and the four-time national champion men's hockey program.

Schmelzer was the first full-time certified athletic trainer for St. Norbert College beginning in 1981, and was the only certified athletic trainer at St. Norbert from 1983 to 1996. He is nationally certified as an athletic trainer though the National Athletic Trainers' Association and is a Licensed Athletic Trainer in the state of Wisconsin.

Schmelzer is a former St. Norbert basketball player and a native of Park Ridge, Ill. He attended UW-Milwaukee before transferring to St. Norbert for his final two years. Schmelzer graduated in 1981 with a personal major in athletic training.

Schmelzer and his wife, Molly, and daughter, Ella, live in Green Bay.
