Jason Senjem

Professional Profile

Tell me and I forget.
Show me and I remember.
Involve me and I understand.
--Old Chinese proverb

I believe that as a teacher it is my responsibility to provide an environment where students can access knowledge in order to create and develop themselves in their own way. In particular, my goal for promoting learning by students is to give them ownership of their learning through involvement.

An important part of involving my students has been in introducing academic service-learning into the classroom through semester projects that allow students to engage in an experience that has real, not simulated, outcomes and involves the learning stages of application, analysis, and synthesis as well as fosters a sense of civic responsibility. This model of teaching fits with the Norbertine value of contemplative action as I help students act in community and then reflect on that action to develop themselves into contributors to the common good.

Scholarship is an important part of my contribution at St. Norbert College. As a management researcher, I am concerned with how organizations use innovative work practices to create economic, social, and environmental value. I involve St. Norbert College students in my research both within the classroom as well as in collaboration. In addition, I believe scholarship about my teaching is important to advance management education in order to have a more productive and responsible society. Examples of some of my work includes my research on the effects of employee empowerment, published in Group and Organization Management, and my study on the value of social networks for new ventures, which has been published in Frontiers of Entrepreneurship Research. I have presented papers at the Academy of Management, Strategic Management Society, British Academy of Management, and Babson-Kaufman Entrepreneurship conferences.

As a professional, I am a member of the Academy of Management, the American Psychological Association, the Society for Human Resource Management, and the Strategic Management Society. In addition, I am a reviewer for the Journal of Management. At St. Norbert College, I am the advisor for Students in Free Enterprise (SIFE) as well as the Program Director for the Peace and Justice Minor.
