Plowing of student lots to take place on Wednesday
We will be removing snow from some of our student lots this Wednesday, Feb. 23. The following lots will be plowed:
Riverside/Vander Zanden Apt. row Lot #1 Third Street South (the large lot between Gries and Mulva) Lot #6 Schuldes West Lot #7 Schuldes South Lot #8 Stewart Street Lot #9
All vehicles must be removed from these Student lots by 4:30 p.m. Any vehicles left in these lots at 4:30 p.m. will be towed at the owner's expense.
Vehicles can temporarily park in any other campus lot (or you can take the vehicle off campus) while the lots are being plowed. All vehicles need to be moved back to a lot valid for their permit type when plowing is complete or by 2:00 a.m.
Posters will be put up today in the Academic buildings and Residential Halls as well as "Plowing today" signs posted at the lot entrances tomorrow.
We are currently working on finding a day/time to clear all the other student lots. Keep watching your e-mail for updates.

Winter safety reminders
No matter how well the snow and ice are removed from sidewalks, parking lots and the surrounding streets, you will invariably encounter some slippery surfaces when walking outdoors in the winter.
Many cold-weather injuries are the result of falls on ice-covered streets, outdoor parking lots and sidewalks. In fact slips and falls are the number one cause of injuries on the St. Norbert College campus.
Getting around on campus in icy conditions calls for planning, caution, and a little common sense.
- Dress warmly and wear boots with non-skid soles (avoid plastic and leather soles).
- Keep warm, but make sure you can see and hear what's going on around you.
- Try not to carry too much--you need to leave your hands and arms free to better balance yourself.
- During the daytime, wear sunglasses to help you see better and avoid hazards. At night, wear bright clothing or reflective gear.
- When entering a building, remove as much snow and water from your boots as possible.
- Be prepared to fall and try to avoid using your arms to break your fall. If you fall backward, make a conscious effort to tuck your chin so your head doesn't strike the ground with a full force.
- Use special care when entering and exiting vehicles -use the vehicle for support.
- Streets, parking lots and sidewalks that have been cleared of snow and ice should still be approached with caution. Look out for "black ice." Dew, fog or water vapor can freeze on cold surfaces and form an extra-thin, nearly invisible layer of ice that can look like a wet spot on the pavement. It often shows up early in the morning or in areas that are shaded from the sun.

Change in dining operations due to deteriorating weather
Due to deteriorating weather conditions, Phil's is closing for the day, with immediate effect. The Caf will remain open until 6 p.m. The library will maintain its usual hours.
At this point, the expectation is that the college will remain open as usual tomorrow, with classes in session as normal. Of course, the situation remains under careful review. Please watch your e-mail for an announcement at 6 a.m. tomorrow, with news of the latest decisions.

Plowing of student parking lots - move your cars
Be advised that we will be removing snow from student lots over the next couple of days.
Beginning at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 10, 2009, the following lots will be plowed: Third St. South lot #6 Schuldes West lot # 7 Schuldes South lot # 8 Stewart St. lot # 9 Michels lot # 13
You must move your car out of all of these lots by 6:00 p.m. on Thursday or it will be towed. You can move to any other cleared lot while these lots are being plowed. You must move your car back to one of the student lots by 10:00 p.m.
Beginning at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, December 12, 2009, the following lots will be plowed: Riverside Vander Zanden lot # 1 College Ave/Freshman lot #12 Bookstore lot # 15 4th St. lot # 16
You must move your car out of all of these lots by 10:00 a.m. on Saturday or it will be towed. You can move to any other cleared lot while these lots are being plowed. You must move your car back to one of the student lots by 4:00 p.m.
Once the snow has stopped tonight it would be a good idea to go to your car, start it and let it run for a while and clean the entire car off while the temperature is still fairly warm. If the temperature drops as it is supposed to the snow will freeze onto your car and make difficult to clean off when you go to leave campus.
10:12 a.m., Wednesday, December 9, 2009 | return to top
The college has closed due to the declining weather condition and as a result, several buildings on campus will also be closed.
The Sensenbrenner Memorial Union and the cafeteria will be open til 7:00 p.m. with limited service.
Please note the following building closures:
Campus Center and Phil's - closed Mulva Library and Ed's - closed Bookstore - closed Computer labs - closed Schuldes - closed with evening sporting events canceled Bemis International Center - closed
All "no overnight parking" lots will be plowed again tonight so please make sure that your car is parked in the appropriate student lot to avoid being towed.

To the St. Norbert Community:
In light of the deteriorating weather conditions, campus will close immediately at 9:00 a.m. The high winds are posing too many safety issues, both on campus and for those attempting to drive to campus. I apologize to all for the inconvenience, and I would like to thank our colleagues who have worked through the night and into the morning to keep essential services open.

To our faculty, staff and students:
St. Norbert College will be OPEN as usual on Wednesday. At 5 a.m. the campus had received about eight inches of snow, but snowplows were busy clearing the main roads and driving visibility wasn't out of the ordinary. Obviously conditions will vary from area to area, and as we said yesterday, your safety is of utmost importance to us, so please use common sense and do not put yourself in danger if your individual commute would be especially risky.
President Kunkel

Winter weather policy
To the St. Norbert community:
I'm sure you're aware that the National Weather Service
is predicting a major winter storm for this area, with snow continuing into Wednesday afternoon. As much as a foot of accumulation is possible, and accompanying high winds will make driving conditions even more dangerous.
As this is the first storm of the year, I thought it would be useful to remind you that as a residential campus quite accustomed to winter weather, our "default" position is to remain open unless conditions are such that driving is inordinately perilous for faculty, staff and commuting students. We will be monitoring weather and road conditions early Wednesday morning and any decision impacting classes will be made and posted by 6 a.m. on this web site or listen for updates on local television and radio stations. If you don't see any cancellation alerts, assume classes will be held as usual. However, your safety is important to us, so please use common sense and do not put yourself in danger if your commute is particularly dangerous, no matter what decision is made regarding classes.
Please remember to be cautious in moving around campus on slick sidewalks or if you have to drive. And help me thank in advance the dozens of facilities, maintenance, housekeeping, residence hall and kitchen employees who will be working around the clock to take care of the rest of us.
Thanks, President Kunkel
