Campus Safety Student Staff Job Descriptions

The Campus Safety Department consists of five full time professional staff members supported by St. Norbert College student assistants.  Students function in the same role as the professional staff and have the same authority.  Campus Safety staff members are not sworn police officers.  They have no arrest powers and do not carry weapons.

Campus Safety Officer

Basic function and responsibility
Provide for the safety and well being of St. Norbert College students, faculty, staff and property through enforcement of college policies and procedures. Preserve peace through conspicuous patrol, respond to calls for assistance including emergency and crisis situations, and provide other safety-related services.

Characteristic duties

  • Perform routine patrols of and through on-campus buildings and the near off-campus areas.
  • Respond to emergency calls for assistance including medical matters, fire alarms and other alarms such including those relating to physical plant such as heat/steam system, etc.
  • Respond to routine calls for assistance including safety escorts and transports, building let-ins and vehicle jumpstarts.
  • Effectively document violations of college policy and other events by producing written incident reports.
  • Lock and unlock campus buildings and offices as necessary.
  • Enforce parking policies through issuance of parking tickets and towing of autos when necessary.
  • Relatedly, assist in the college’s snow removal process by helping coordinate vehicular evacuations of lots designated for snow removal.
  • Work closely with members of the local police and fire departments on matters of mutual concern relating to the safety of the campus community.

Qualifications

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, a pleasant disposition and an ability to communicate with diplomacy and tact in sensitive situations.
  • Strong written communication skills.
  • Ability to maintain confidential information.
  • Ability to exercise sound judgment and work independently.
  • Ability to handle multiple, simultaneous responsibilities in oftentime stressful situations.
  • Ability and willingness to work a wide variety of shifts including late night/early morning hours and weekends.
  • Valid driver’s license with favorable driving record required.

Supervision received
Supervision is received from the director and/or associate director of Campus Safety.

Supervision exercised
Functional supervision may be exercised over Campus Safety dispatchers in the absence of the director or associate director.


Campus Safety Dispatcher

Basic function and responsibility
Provide for the safety and well being of St. Norbert College students, faculty, staff and property by supplementing the efforts of Campus Safety officers. Perform functions relating to emergency and routine radio and telephone communications. Document shift activity of Campus Safety officers. Monitor campus alarm systems. Assist walk-ins who request service or assistance.

Characteristic duties

  • Operate the Communications Center of the department of Campus Safety, including answering telephones, two-way radios and campus Blue Phones in oftentimes stressful situations.
  • Document activities and actions of Campus Safety officers, including building opening and closing times, safety transports and escorts, building let-ins and other Campus Safety services.
  • Monitor campus alarm systems and direct officers’ response to same. Notify local police and fire officials when necessary. Monitor police/fire department scanner for activity occurring in St. Norbert College area.
  • Assist officers’ field efforts by accessing computerized campus information.
  • Serve as a receptionist/resource person for walk-ins needing information, directions or other types of customer service.

Qualifications

  • Experience in data entry and retrieval.

Supervision received
Supervision is received from the director and/or associate director of Campus Safety. Functional supervision may be received from Campus Safety officers in the absence of the director or associate director.


Campus Safety Office Assistant

Basic function and responsibility
Provide clerical support for the Campus Safety department's administrative office.

Characteristic duties

  • General office-related duties including copying, filing, answering phones, etc.
  • Assist in the collection and entry of data for use in the department's assessment and program review efforts.
  • Provide assistance with various projects upon request, including the development and/or refinement of PowerPoint programs, spreadsheets, bulletin boards and other.
  • Assist in the preparation of a newsletter for campus-wide distribution.

Qualifications

  • Demonstrated ability to maintain strict confidentiality in working with sensitive information.
  • Must be proficient in a variety of software programs, notably Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Excel. Experience with Microsoft Access is a plus.
  • A sense of humor and an ability to think creatively are important.
