2004
Position Area(s):
Writing and Public Relations
Major/Minor(s):
English
Alumni Profile: Kristin Alberts

Kristin Alberts graduated from St. Norbert College in 2004 as an English major with a creative writing emphasis. Knowing she wanted to build a career as a writer, Kristin sought a profession that would allow her to pursue that dream.

She was introduced to the world of emergency medicine shortly after graduation and completed her Emergency Medical Technician training in December 2004, coming out with both Wisconsin State and National Registry licensures. Kristin is employed as an EMT and squad leader with the Oconto Falls Ambulance Service, a rescue squad that covers over 200 square miles of the northwoods of Oconto county. She also puts writing skills to work there as the public relations officer, writing articles and handling publicity for local newspapers. She occasionally returns to her small hometown in Door County, Wis. to volunteer as an EMT.

While staying at the ambulance station on duty, Kristin has the freedom to complete her writing projects. She does freelance article writing for both newspapers and magazines, though her passion is creative writing. She gives readings around the state, and is an active member of the Wisconsin Fellowship of Poets. Her poems have appeared in publications both here and abroad. Her first full-length book of poetry—Where Water Might Be Blue—was released by Wm Caxton Ltd in early 2006. Some of her current work is posted on her web site at www.kristinalberts.com. Her first novel is currently in the beginning stages of the editing process, and her second book of poetry is in the works.

Since graduation, she completed a local Vietnam veteran’s memoir for Congressional Medal of Honor consideration and congressional review. In addition, she was recently hired to act as editor on a second novel for a local author. Kristin counts the close relationships with professors and excellent opportunities in the writing field—including Sigma Tau Delta internships, Graphos, SNC Times and independent study courses—as having granted her the courage and freedom to live the writer’s life.
