Alumni Profile: Stacy De Coster
Stacy De Coster attended St. Norbert College on a Presidential Scholarship. At SNC, she was awarded the Outstanding Student in Sociology & Anthropology Award and the John E. Cramer Award for Academic Achievement. She gained professional experience by serving as a teaching assistant for the Department of Sociology & Anthropology and by tutoring in the college writing lab. She was awarded the Bachelor of Arts degree magna cum laude in 1992.
In 1992, she entered the graduate program in Sociology at the University of Iowa. At the University of Iowa, she was awarded the Edwin Ford Piper Memorial Scholarship for academic achievement in 1993 and in 1995. For her dissertation work, she was awarded a National Science Foundation Dissertation Improvement Grant and the Jeanne Humphrey Block Dissertation Award from the Murray Research Center at Radcliffe College. She earned her M.A. and Doctor of Philosophy degrees in 1995 and 1999, respectively.
After earning her doctorate, she served as an Assistant Professor of Sociology at the University of Massachusetts and at North Carolina State University. She currently serves as an Associate Professor at NCSU. In this capacity, she fulfills roles in teaching, research, and service. She teaches undergraduate and graduate courses in sociological and criminological theory and has received the Gary D. Hill Teaching Excellence Award (2003) and the Lonnie and Carol Poole Teaching Excellence Award (2005). Her research focuses on explicating gender and race differences in illegal behaviors and mental health problems and has been published in various academic journals and edited volumes. She serves the profession as a member of the editorial board for the Journal of Research in Crime and Delinquency, as a member of the Program Committee for the National Meetings of the American Society of Criminology, and as the chair of Masters and Doctoral research projects. She also serves as a reviewer for several professional journals and for the National Science Foundation.
